ABOUT US - General information about the club ...
The Oceanside Senior Anglers club (OSA) was formed in 1994 to provide a sportfishing outlet to seniors of Southern California and elsewhere. The club is open to seniors over the age of 50, and membership includes a spouse or significant other.
The club has grown steadily year by year and by the end of 2011 we had close to 400 members and almost 700 including spousal members. Club activities are centered around chartered saltwater fishing trips for members and, in addition, we hold social events including numerous picnics and an annual banquet, as well as various events to raise funds for Kids Trips and Wounded Warrior trips that we host. We understand that the Oceanside Senior Anglers club is one of largest fishing clubs in California, and has a conservation policy that encourages all members to follow on club trips and on any other fishing trips that they participate in.
FISHING
We are primarily saltwater oriented, with fishing trips ranging from 3/4 day inshore fishing, through overnight trips for yellowtail etc. to 2-day offshore trips for tuna and other pelagic species. We negotiate and charter a boat for each of our scheduled trips. In 2012 we have around 25 club charter trips scheduled, primarily out of San Diego, and may add more as the year progresses. In addition to the scheduled club fishing trips, individual club members organize numerous side trips throughout the year, generally with fellow members, to Baja and mainland Mexico and further afield to places such as Alaska, Canada, Florida, Costa Rica, Panama, Puerto Rico and even to the Amazon.
SOCIAL
On the social front we have various picnics throughout the year. These are a great opportunity for members and their guests to enjoy some great food at absolutely rock-bottom prices, and, more importantly, they provide an opportunity – especially for spouses – to mix & meet other club members in a non-fishing environment. In 2012 we are planning for around ten events, including a Hamburger & Hotdog Picnic, Italian Fest, Irish Feast, Pig Roast, Cioppino Fest, Fish Fry, Silent Auction, Clam Bake, Turkey Fry and Shrimp Boil … and at year-end there’s our Annual Christmas Banquet held in the Oceanside area when the new club Officers are installed, awards and prizes are given, and a good time is had by all. From time to time club members band together for some spectacular cruises to various exotic parts.
EVENTS
Every year we sponsor and run as many Kids Fishing trips as our funds allow, where we can take up to 30 kids per trip from area Boys & Girls clubs, Marine families, and other deserving organizations on a chartered boat, generally out of Oceanside or San Diego. Also we run Wounded Warriors fishing trips for wounded servicemen and women from Camp Pendleton Marine Base and Balboa Naval Hospital. This year, 2012, we are planning for four Kids trips and three Wounded Warrior trips. The club raises funds for these and other club activities every year through member donations and representation at the Del Mar Fred Hall Show, Oceanside Harbor Days and Oceanside Senior Days.
MEETINGS
Club meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month from 9:00 am to 11:30am at the Oceanside Senior Center, located at 455 North Country Club Lane in Oceanside. At each meeting well known and knowledgeable guest speakers are scheduled to cover areas such as fishing destinations, fishing tips for local, offshore and long-range fishing, equipment maintenance, fishing tackle, conservation and specific information on different fish species. Guests interested in joining are welcome at our meetings (see Maps for directions).
MEMBERSHIP
The membership dues for 2012 are $15 for either renewals (deadline December 31) or new members, plus an extra $15 to cover costs if the monthly FishTales newsletter is received as hardcopy by mail, rather than via this, the club's website, in which case there is no additional charge.
