2/9/2012 - Captain Ron Baker needs help for Kids Fishing Tournament
In past years several members of the Oceanside Senior Anglers Club have served as volunteer helpers at Captain Ron Baker’s “CRYSTAL PIER KIDS CLASSIC.” This year the Classic will be held on Saturday, July 21st from 8:00AM to 3:00PM at the Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach.
Ron has asked if the Club can furnish 5 to 10 volunteers to help at this event which will have several hundreds of kids fishing from the pier. Captain Ron has spoken at our Club meetings numerous times and has always supported us. Hopefully, our Club has members willing to assist Ron in making this annual event a huge success once again, and hundreds of kids will be introduced to our favorite sport of fishing.
If you would like to volunteer to help at the CRYSTAL PIER KIDS CLASSIC please call me at 760-294-3395. All you need is a pair of dykes to cut line, parking places will be reserved for us and lunch is furnished for all kids and volunteers.

2/7/2012 - February Club Meeting notes
-
President Jim Mauritz opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Club Secretary Genie Hansen then followed up with reading of the previous meeting, after which Treasurer Sue Reeves gave the Treasurer's Report.
-
Membership Director Jerry Porter announced the new members since the last meeting and gave the current membership count which at this point looks very healthy for the year.
-
Program Director Jerry Auerbach introduced meeting speaker Doug Kern, of Fishermans Landing Tackle store. Doug gave a great presentation focusing on tackle and techniques for Calico Bass. Calico Bass fans will have gone away with some valuable new ideas on catching this prized fish.
- Social Director Lee Wood summarized the status of the picnics scheduled so far (click here for the schedule as it stands at this early stage). Lee stressed that unless somebody steps up to handle the Irish Picnic it may not be held.
- Head Chartermaster John DeWitt announced his 2012 Charter Schedule, which currently has 20 trips, but in all likelihood more may be added as the season unfolds. We have a good mix of different trips and boats, including a couple of 21/2 day Tuna trips later in the year.
- Jim Mauritz instituted a trial whereby the first half of the 50/50 door prize was done before the break, in order to give those who leave after the break (for whatever reason) a chance.
- After the break a short presentation on club's website, osanglers.org, was given by yours truly OSA Webmaster Vern Francis. This was intended to give a general overview of what's in the website along with some of the more useful content. Feedback and comments are welcome with a view to making the website more usable and useful to our members.
- Wounded Warrior Chairman Deek Takacs described a recent Wounded Warrior Conference he attended at Camp Pendleton, where the overall program was described which provided some very useful and detailed information on how to go about supporting their program. Many organizations were present.
- Sunshine Lady Joyce McClelland gave news of ailing, and better yet, recuperating members.
- The dreaded but sometimes coveted Dipstick was finally wrested away from Brian Smith (understandably absent), and won by Hank Mabry for a concentration lapse when dealing with his door prize tickets. Speaking of which, the last half of the 50/50 door prize award was then accomplished as the last item on the agenda before adjournment.

1/21/2012 - Trip Report - January 17-19 on Dominator
We have just completed our first charter for this year. We departed on January 17th at 7:50pm aboard the Dominator and headed down to the Banda Banks. We all got our gear ready that night for our day of bottom fishing. On the 18th, we had a day of full sunshine, it was cold due to the wind that was blowing and then the boat was a rocking. Many of our anglers kept at it all day, and many of us had our naps throughout the day. The fishing was slow but steady most of the day. We fished as deep as 300 feet and as shallow as 100 feet. As a group we bagged 40 Vermilion, 5 lingcods and 118 various Rockfish, giving us a total of 163. The jackpot was won by
Peter Rohrich with a 5 3/4 pound Vermilion. Our club also picked up another new member on this charter
Mike Wittmer, welcome to the club Mike. The food aboard the Dominator again was great. Even with the cold weather and rocking ship, everyone had a fantastic time. I would like to thank my assistant Charter Master
Jack Limber for a job well done. You can also check out the
photos on our web-site.

1/11/2012 - January picnic report
The club's first picnic of the year, yesterday January 10th, went off in style and in perfect weather. The hamburgers & hotdogs went down very well, along with all the various fixings. A big thanks to event chairman, President
Jim Mauritz, and to the cooks, servers and all other helpers too numerous to name. Click

1/11/2012 - Anglers Now Need a Visa to Fish Mexican Waters!
Per the Log Newspaper and other sources, starting this month, a new immigration law in Mexico requires all U.S. citizens
fishing in Mexican waters -- within 24 miles of shore or on land -- to obtain a
visa. The cost will be $33 to $250, on top of the required $11 Mexico fishing
license fee for a day of angling. Click
here for details.
If in doubt for any OSA club trip, contact the trip chartermaster.
